The battery percentage in the icon can be disabled by starting the ACPI StatusIcon with the parameter --no-percentage.

To add this parameter, you have to go to System -> Settings -> Startup Applications. Then edit the entry ACPI StatusIcon and change the command to acpi-statusicon --no-percentage.
